“Now I see”: the power of impact entrepreneurship in Africa

“My name is Jacqueline Kiage, I’m the Co-Founder of Innovation Eye Centre – Kisii Eye Hospital, an health social enterprise that offers high quality, affordable and accessible eye care services to the community in the South Western Region of Kenya and beyond

I’ve attended the Impact Entrepreneurship Showcase in Nairobi on 4th May 2016, and there I saw businesses that serve the poor, marginalized and underserved communities in Africa.  I saw solutions that tackle the diverse social challenges facing Africa. I saw leaders and champions of social change. The event, organized by E4Impact Foundation, Tangaza University College and the SDG Philanthropy Platform was great and there were lots of businesses showcased by the MBA Alumni ranged from solar energy, health, waste management, ICT, education and agribusiness.

What did all these impact enterprises have in common? All the businesses provided solutions to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that were set in 2015 by the UN to provide a framework for change. Impact enterprises are bridging the gap that exists between the government and NGO programmes using sustainable entrepreneurial business models to solve social problems with a focus on a more inclusive society. At Innovation Eye Centre – Kisii Eye Hospital we are working towards eliminating avoidable blindness by providing accessible, affordable quality comprehensive eye care services to ALL.

Collaboration is the key to implementing the SDGs. In less than 3 years, Innovation Eye Centre has partnered with organizations such as the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Fiat Lux Foundation, Right to Sight, Aravind Eye Care System to improve livelihoods.

  • 35,847 Total Number Hospital Based & Community Outreach patient visits
  • 2611 Total Number of Surgeries
  • 5511 Refractive errors corrected
  • 144 Community Outreach Eye Mobile Camps

Collaborations between Impact Enterprises and Impact Investors such as the SDG Platform to finance the Sustainable Development Goals  will lead to partnerships with other stakeholders that are committed to find solutions and transform Africa. Africa with no poverty and clean energy, Africa with good health and wellness, Africa with industries, innovation and infrastructure, Africa where partnerships are used for the common good.

How are you contributing to the new Africa?”
