 APPROPRIATE ENERGY SAVING TECHNOLOGIES LTD 

Woman-led social enterprise that creates livelihood opportunities for women in the cook stove and fuel value chain in Eastern Uganda. It was founded in June 2012 in response to the increasing scarcity of firewood and wood charcoal in Uganda, and the need for clean sustainable alternative sources of cooking fuel. The enterprise makes organic charcoal for cooking from agricultural waste as an alternative to wood fuel among  households and institutions in urban and peri urban areas in Eastern Uganda.

Major Achievements

  • AEST has worked with a network of 52 community-based women entrepreneurs who get support in their marketing and sales;
  • It has a capacity production of 2 tons of briquettes per day and 600 cook stoves per month;
  • It has an advisory board comprising of seven members and an implementing team comprising of 12 members (70% are women);
  • Works with worthy partners, such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT Dlab), Makerere University, Gulu university (sends students to intern at AEST for research purposes).
  • It won the Women Empowerment Award 2015 (75,000 USD) from Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves;
  • Betty won the Woman Entrepreneur of the year Award 2017 from Clean Cooking Alliance;
  • In 2015, she also won the Scale-up Fellowship from MIT Dlab (20,000 USD).
