Business incubation/acceleration of pig agripreneurs in Uganda
Pig farming is an important sector in Uganda’s economy, providing a source of income and food for many smallholder farmers.
The sector faces several challenges that limit its growth and profitability, like low productivity, high disease incidence, inadequate knowledge and skills, limited access to markets and low-quality products.
In response to these problems, the Business incubation/acceleration of pig agripreneurs in Uganda project proposes an incubation program to train actors in the pig value chain in either Masaka, Mukono, Mpigi, and Wakiso districts of Uganda. These include service providers of feed formulations, animal health and pig breeding, as well as the market actors that improve productivity, profitability and quality of pig products.
The overall aim of this project is to empower pig agri-preneurs with the necessary business skills through incubation and mentorship to enhance their productivity and profitability.
Within the project, E4Impact has the role to conduct need assestments, tailor training and mentorship programs and to facilitate an online platform where the inputs and service providers can share information.
This project is part of the CGIAR Initiative Sustainable Animal Productivity for Livelihoods, Nutrition and Gender Inclusion (SAPLING) that focusies on sustainable animal productivity. This initiative aims to contribute to transforming livestock sectors in target countries to make them more productive, resilient, equitable and sustainable. It is working in seven countries located in East Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda), West Africa (Mali), Southeast Asia (Vietnam) and South Asia (Nepal), on 15 livestock value chains in total.
Given the success of the project in Uganda, it was also launched in Rwanda in 2024, in the Gakenke district.
